Hi Casey! It is great to hear you will be running track when you get to DSU. What events to you run/jump/throw? :o) I am currently a junior here and have ran track and cross country since I was a freshman. I run LONG distance, anywhere from the 1500 to the 10K to a half marathon and a marathon next month. To answer your question, practices normally are held at 3:30 M-F. The team gets together up at the field house, goes on a short warm-up run (4-5 blocks) and then stretches together. We break into groups of sprinters/mid-distance/distance runners and go to our respective coaches. They'll say what the workout is for the day whether it be mileage, cross-training, or a work-out on the track. After your work-out usually once or twice a week there'll be mandatory lifting. For distance runners this is more of a workout than strength training, but I couldn't tell you for sure what the sprinters lifting is like. Workouts are usually Monday and Tuesday of the week or Monday and Wednesday. The day before the meet we usually take pretty easy and get after it hard on the day of the meet. Weekends are on your own but I know coaches still expect you to get up and get a little workout in. Meets are so much different than high school! It really comes down to seeing how good of an athlete you can become because there is so much good competition out there and we go to meets that allow us to compete against them. I know I've personally blown away the times in every event I ever competed in in high school. I think if you ask anyone on the track team they would say they love going to practice and the friendship within the team. We like to have fun but at the same time improve ourselves out on the track. All of the coaches are equally as excited to help you improve as an individual but also as a team on relays and by working out together. If there is ever a reason you can't make it to practice all you have to do is let the coaches know and they'll make sure one of them is available during the day to help you get your workout in. Now, I know I wrote a book but I hope this answers your question! Can't wait to see you next year! |
