A Guide for Transfer Students

Transferring to DSU

Students transfer to Dakota State for many different reasons: the great variety of academic programs strengthened by the integration of technology, caring faculty, excellent career placement and very affordable tuition. But the greatest reason why students transfer to DSU is the personal attention we give to transfer students. In fact, transfer students make up one-third of Dakota State's student population.

Take the Next Step

At DSU, we encourage you to begin the transfer process early. This will ensure a smooth transition and allow you to take the time to visit campus and meet with an admission counselor. Please follow up with Enrollment Services for all aspects of your application, registration and payment if you apply within one month of the start of the semester.

"I was drawn to DSU because of the supportive learning environment, quality of education and inexpensive tuition. The individual attention I receive is nothing like I've experienced anywhere else." - Malia Norton | DSU Transfer Student

Apply

To begin the process of transferring to Dakota State, apply online or request an application for admission from the Enrollment Services Office.

You will be notified by mail of your acceptance. Included in the acceptance letter will be housing and food service contracts. If you do not receive this information or if you have any questions regarding your admission, please contact Enrollment Services. Make Sure to submit these items to complete your application file. * · $20 application fee · Official high school transcript · Official transcripts from all institutions attended ** · Official ACT or SAT scores · Copy of immunization record * not necessary if you are transferring from another South Dakota public university ** not required from other South Dakota public universities

Transcript Evaluation

In order for you to receive timely information, please have all of your official transcript sent directly to DSU. You may then contact Enrollment Services and request that a transfer credit evaluation be completed. Your results can be mailed to you or will be available when you come to campus to register for classes.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, or if you prefer, you can request the FAFSA from the Enrollment Services Office. Remember, financial aid and scholarships can only be awarded after a student has been admitted to Dakota State. Additional financial aid and scholarship information can be found at www.departments.dsu.edu/financial. If you currently receive federal financial aid, please add DSU to your list of institutions by calling 1-800-4-FED-AID or visit www.studentaid.ed.gov. DSU's school code is 003463.

Registration

Once you have applied and been accepted, you will be sent information on available registration dates. Transfer students can register on these dates or by appointment once new student registration has started. Please contact the Enrollment Services Office to schedule your appointment. Enrollment Services will then schedule a visit with your advisor and any other necessary meetings. When you arrive for your scheduled appointment, you will receive a registration packet including your transcript evaluation from Enrollment Services. If necessary, you will complete placement tests at this time. An advisor will be assigned based on your choice of major. Your advisor will assist you in selecting classes and will help you register through Web Advisor, our online registration program. If you are undecided, you will be assigned to the college of Arts and Sciences.

Placement Tests

Students who have not successfully completed the equivalent of English 101 and/or Math 102 will be placed in courses at their determined level based on the ACT scores. If this information is not available or if you wish to challenge your placement, you will take computerized placement tests during your registration appointment. For sample placement test questions, go to www.departments.dsu.edu/assessment.

Student Services

After you have registered, please stop by the Student Services Office, located in the Trojan Center (student union). They will give you a student ID and will also verify that your housing and food service contracts are in order or that you have been waived from those programs*.

*The board of Regents requirement for room and board is for your first two years out of high school

Payment

Once you have registered, you will receive a bill, an appointment time for payment and payment options. Your registration is subject to cancellation if you have not made timely payment arrangements. If you do not receive a bill or if you have questions regarding payment, please contact the Enrollment Services Office.

"I transferred to DSU because they had my major, elementary education. After visiting campus and seeing all the clubs and organizations they offered, I became interested in Dance Team too. I've been a member ever since." - Kelley Torchia | DSU Transfer Student
